It's about 3 1/2 feet tall, has leaves that are over a foot long and grows on a very fleshy stem. The top has 3 sections of flowers just like the one pictured.
It's definitely not a squash because it has one fleshy stem. It looks like a tropical bush of some kind (and we are not in a tropical climate). It sprung from the ground out of the blue. We have lived here 4 years and never seen anything like it on our property. It's so weird.
Risa - you are correct. I went over to that site and it's definitely Jimson Weed. I'm surprised how many people are advertising that they want it on gardenweb.
So, I'm thinking that using these leaves in salad are out...

Are you sure it's not a squash of some kind?

Oh and the flowers are at the TOP of the 3 foot stem so unless it's a hanging squash...

I'm thinking, don't eat any of it.
Jimson Weed is my guess. Nice one ... so to speak ...
